On our journey from Ogbomoso in Oyo State, we made a remarkable stop at Orile Ijaiye, the historic site of Nigeria’s first Baptist Church, established in 1853.
The original church building, now over 172 years old, still stands behind the newly built auditorium – preserved as a relic of rich Christian heritage. Interestingly, the old structure is now being used as a classroom!
We also explored the cemetery behind the church, where the founding fathers of the church are buried – sadly, it’s now in ruins. Beside the church lies the vicarage (pastorium), likely renovated over the years.
This is a powerful piece of Baptist and Nigerian history that deserves recognition as a heritage and tourist site – for both spiritual reflection and economic potential.
Visiting this ancient site was a deeply fulfilling experience, offering a profound appreciation for how cultural traditions have been carefully preserved and passed down through generations.
