Spiritually Reborn As God’s Children

Text: John 1:12-13 (NIV)
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

Introduction

Being spiritually reborn is not just a concept—it is a divine transformation that changes the very essence of who we are. When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we are not merely joining a religion or following a set of moral rules. We are born again into a new identity, a new family, and a new destiny. We become God’s children—not by biology, but by spiritual rebirth through faith in Christ.

This sermon explores what it means to be spiritually reborn, why it is necessary, and how it changes every area of our lives.

1. The Need for Spiritual Rebirth

John 3:3 – “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

Jesus told Nicodemus that no one can enter God’s kingdom unless they are born again. Why? Because we are all born into sin. Our natural birth brings us into the world physically, but we remain spiritually dead—separated from God. Sin corrupts our hearts and blinds our understanding. That’s why religion alone cannot save us. Morality cannot cleanse us. Only spiritual rebirth through the Holy Spirit can restore us.

Being spiritually reborn is not a suggestion—it is a requirement for anyone who wants to walk with God and live eternally with Him.

2. The Process of Rebirth: By Grace Through Faith

Ephesians 2:8-9 – “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Spiritual rebirth happens when we believe in Jesus Christ and surrender our lives to Him. It is not something we achieve by our own effort—it is a gift from God. At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit, washes us clean, and brings us into a living relationship with God.

We become new creations. Our past is forgiven. Our hearts are renewed. We are adopted into God’s family, not as guests, but as sons and daughters with full inheritance.

3. The Identity of God’s Children

Romans 8:16 – “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

To be spiritually reborn is to step into a brand-new identity:

  • We are no longer slaves to sin, but sons and daughters of righteousness.

  • We are heirs of God, co-heirs with Christ, with access to every spiritual blessing.

  • We are deeply loved, fully accepted, and eternally secure in the Father’s hands.

  • We are led by the Spirit, no longer driven by the flesh.

Our identity is not shaped by our past mistakes, culture, or family background. It is shaped by who God says we are: His beloved children.

4. The Evidence of Spiritual Rebirth

2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Rebirth brings real change. It is not just an inward experience—it produces visible fruit:

  • A hunger for God’s Word and presence

  • A lifestyle of repentance and obedience

  • A desire to serve, love, and forgive others

  • A transformation in character—love, joy, peace, patience, etc.

  • A burden for the lost and a passion for righteousness

If we have truly been born again, our lives will reflect the image of Christ.

5. Living as God’s Children

Being spiritually reborn is not the end—it’s the beginning of a lifelong journey. As God’s children, we are called to:

  • Walk in intimacy with the Father through prayer and worship

  • Grow in spiritual maturity by studying the Word and fellowshipping with other believers

  • Serve with humility and use our gifts to build the church

  • Shine the light of Christ in a dark world through our lifestyle and witness

  • Endure trials with faith, knowing that our Father never leaves or forsakes us

Conclusion: The Invitation

Have you been spiritually reborn? Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord?

The invitation still stands: “To all who receive Him, to those who believe in His name, He gives the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve been. If you believe in Jesus, you can be born again today. You can become a child of the living God. It’s time to leave the old life behind and step into the new life God has prepared for you.

Let us pray:
“Father, thank You for the gift of salvation. Thank You for making us Your children through Jesus Christ. Help us to live as sons and daughters who honor You in every way. For those yet to experience spiritual rebirth, draw them to Yourself today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
